Isaiah came to us with his floral inspired engagement ring and a wedding band that he had received from his mother that he wanted to use as the band for the ring. The problem is that the two rings didn’t work together and he didn’t know what could be done. As a custom jeweler and manufacturer, RUMMELL Jewelry is designed for this exact situation.
Beyond Standard Limitations
In the jewelry industry, there is a separation between the retailer and the manufacturer. Most retailers (where jewelry is purchased) sell pre-fabricated jewelry sourced from a variety of different wholesale manufacturers. Manufacturers rarely (if ever) interact with the client who ultimately purchases the piece of jewelry. If Isaiah had gone to another retail store, he would have been presented with a variety of in-stock options that would have been loosely paired with his engagement ring and would have been pressured by price drops and false information, i.e. that his mother’s metal and diamonds couldn’t be reused. Fortunately, RUMMELL Jewelry is both a retailer and in-house manufacturer who has the technology and expertise to create a custom wedding band that checks all of the boxes.
The Technical Side: 3D Scanning and CAD
To begin Isaiah’s project, we used a 3D scanner to scan his current engagement ring. A 3D scanner uses a laser to create an exact digital replica of the ring that can then be imported into CAD software. Once imported our designer can directly build a new band around the scanned image to create a perfectly matching set. Once created, a 3D render of the two rings is sent to the client for approval. The next step is to 3D print a plastic model that the client can then try on and pair with the existing engagement ring to make sure the fit is exactly as imagined.
The Result: A Reimagined Heritage
The final step in the journey to create a perfect wedding band pairing is to manufacture the ring. We were able to take Isaiah’s inherited band and reuse the materials in the creation of the new ring. By blending retail design expertise and manufacturing capability, we were able to honor the unique design of the engagement ring and preserve the sentiment of his mother’s wedding band by incorporating it and giving it new life.
